Dave's Depots - Union Station, Omaha, Nebraska

Business travels recently took me to Omaha, Nebraska, where I visited Union Station. The Station was used by the Union Pacific, Milwaukee Road, Chicago & Northwestern, and the Wabash. The "other" Omaha railroad, the Burlington, used a facility across the tracks, which will be covered in another edition of "Dave's Depots."

Omaha Union Station was closed in 1971, and in 1975 re-opened as the Durham Museum of Western History, a role it continues to serve today. In the late 1990s the waiting room was restored. The waiting room is beautiful, and largely intact, right town to the Soda Fountain, which continues to serve the same purpose.

Down at track level, there are numerous exhibits of Omaha and Western History. There are many rail exhibits including the body of a Omaha Streetcar, a Union Pacific 4-6-0, a Union Pacific 6-4-6 Sleeper National Command, a Southern Pacific lounge car, and a 10 section Pullman obs car, re-named Cornhusker Club.
